Turns out the gig economy is actually shrinking

Turns out the gig economy is actually shrinkingTurns out the gig economy is actually shrinkingIt seems like the gig economy is booming, with much talk in the media about the death of the regular job, and seemingly everyone freelancing and driving for Uber. But two recent reports one from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), published last year, and one from the Economic Policy Institute, published in February show that the contingent work market is actually declining.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe Economic Policy Institute (EPI) data covered a ten-year period, from 2005-2017. The report measures contingent work as a contract employee or temporary help, independent contracting, or day labor work. The changes toward voreingestellt work and away from contingent work were gradual, yet real and noticeable. In 2005, the total percentage of the labor force working in nonvoreinges tellt work arrangements was 10.9%. In 2017, it was 10.1%. By comparison, the previous BLS report had similar percentages. The independent contractor workforce is getting increasingly older, and older workers were more likely to be independent contractors than any other age group in both 2005 and 2017. Still, they also saw a decline. Independent workers between the ages of 55-64 went from 10.8% in 2005 to 9.3% in 2017.Between 2005 and 2017, the percentage of workers who were independent contractors fell from 7.4% to 6.9%.Other findingsThe most popular segment of contingent work? You guessed it transportation and utilities, at 22%.In May 2017, 89.9% of the workforce was employed in a standard arrangement as their main job.Looks like were not all going to turn into Taskrabbits anytime soon. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily sc hedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Anti-trustworthy

Anti-trustworthyAnti-trustworthyThe Paper of Record concedes its a slow news day by running, top right above the fold, a look at the latest doings of the DOJs Antitrust Division. Interesting reading for legal news geeks nonetheless the efforts of Obamas top trustbuster, Christine Varney, a former Hogan Hartson partner and Clinton-era FTC commissioner, to rein in a host of major industries are reportedly so aggressive that she is getting pushback from within the administration. (The phone call is coming from inside the house? Well, the leaks are coming from inside the White House) Among the industries in Varneys crosshairs telecoms, airlines, railroads (?), and at the special request of Vermonts Bernie Sandersthose BigMilk nogoodniks. The article also has some vague details about what or who the DOJ is leid going after In connection to the White House effort to overhaul financial regulation, officials weighed but rejected a significant antitrust role as a way to reduce the size of la rge companies considered too big to be allowed to fail.Meaning, the DOJ was considering breaking up some banks, but then decided against. Or, alternatively, the DOJ was considering a more expansive definition of too big to fail, but then bagged it. Or something else entirely Hard to say, move along. -posted by brian

Changing Your Clocks for Daylight Saving Time

Changing Your Clocks for Daylight Saving Time Changing Your Clocks for Daylight Saving Time Each year, the exact dates for instituting and ending daylight saving time change, but in the United States, it begins at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. The concept  was designed to extend daylight later into the evening during the summer months by pushing clocks forward during that part of the year, usually by one hour. With the exception of countries near the equator, most nations of the world use some form of daylight saving time or have done so in the past. When to Change Your Clocks Its easy to remember which way to change the clock by remembering that you spring forward in the spring and fall back in the fall.  Specifically, you reset your clocks from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. when daylight saving time begins and reset them from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. when it ends. This chart provides beginning and ending dates for daylight saving time through 2032. Daylight Saving Time Calendar Dates Year Begins Ends 2019 March 10 November 3 2020 March 8 November 1 2021 March 14 November 7 2022 March 13 November 6 2023 March 12 November 5 2024 March 10 November 3 2025 March 9 November 2 2026 March 8 November 1 2027 March 14 November 7 2028 March 12 November 5 2029 March 11 November 4 2030 March 10 November 3 2031 March 9 November 2 2032 March 14 November 7 Why Do We Have Daylight Saving Time? Benjamin Franklin first broached the subject of moving clocks to take advantage of summer daylight in a 1784 essay. The idea did not take hold, though, until World War I, beginning with Germanys efforts to save fuel by moving clocks ahead one hour. The logic was that the more daylight people had later into the evening, the less energy they would need to use for artificial light. The idea spread throughout Europe, and the U.S. enacted a law in 1918 that established daylight saving time in addition to standardizing time zones. During World War II, the U.S. expanded daylight saving time to the full year. Then, after the conclusion of the war, there was no federal law, and states and local municipalities could make their own decisions about observing daylight saving time. This, not surprisingly, wreaked havoc with transportation schedules, broadcast schedules, and more, leading to a federal standard again being adopted in 1966. States still can exempt themselves from daylight saving time if their legislatures pass a law choosing not to follow it. As of 2018, Arizona and Hawaii do not observe daylight saving time. Why 2 A.M.? Changing clocks at 2 a.m. might seem like a strange and arbitrary time, but a logical argument exists for why that time was chosen. Its an hour with a limited number of activities that would be impacted during the time clocks are changed. Most businesses are closed, and buses and trains have minimal demand at that hour. Additionally, using 2 a.m. as the designated time prevents the confusion of a time change that would shift back to the previous day. Regardless, few people actually change their clocks at precisely 2 a.m. Most people switch their clocks before they go to bed the night before the change. Increasingly, technology is making it so that people dont have to do anything to change clocks. While some timepieces certainly still need to be changed manually, computers, cell phones, smart watches, cars, and appliances all can be programmed to make the change automatically at the appropriate time. Opposition to Daylight Saving Time Though the practice has become accepted, daylight saving time still has its share of critics. Farmers, in particular, generally start their day based on when the sun rises, which happens later in the day- according to the clock- when daylight saving time is in effect. In an article on webexhibits.org, a farmer notes that his livestock does not recognize that it is supposed to be an hour later or an hour earlier. Parents of schoolchildren also frequently criticized daylight saving time because it reduces available daylight in the morning at the beginning and at the end of the school year. The result is that children often are expected to walk to school or to bus stops during times of heavy traffic when it is still dark outside. Dayling saving time sometimes leads to confusion that can have consequences ranging from disastrous to amusing. In 1999, three Palestinian terrorists presumably blew themselves up because their targets in Israel had changed their clocks for the winter. Not realizing the difference in time led to the bombs detonating while they still were being transported to their destinations. On the lighter side, the time change can create inconsistencies with the birth certificates of twins if one is born just before clocks are pushed back and the other is born after they are set back. For example, if a twin is born 1 minute before clocks are to be set back, and the other twin is born 15 minutes later, after clocks had been set back, the birth certificates would indicate that the older twin was born at 1:59 a.m. while the younger twin was born at 1:14 a.m. How Much Money Does Daylight Saving Time Save? Little agreement exists on how much- if any- money daylight saving time saves. A study  done to measure the financial impact in Indiana after it adopted daylight saving time concluded that changing clocks actually had the opposite effect of the one intended. While people did use less artificial light, they spent more on heating and cooling, resulting in an overall increase in energy usage of 1 percent. In the warmest summer months, people used their air conditioning longer into the evening, and in the cooler spring and fall months, they used their heat more in the darker mornings. While daylight saving time arguably benefits tourism and other industries that profit from recreational activities, Forbes notes that television ratings take a hit because people are outside longer as opposed to inside watching their favorite programs. A 2012 paper in the Journal of Applied Psychology even argued that daylight saving time had a negative impact on productivity because it increased cyberloafing, when employees surf the internet instead of working. The authors argued that daylight saving time has a negative impact on sleep habits and patterns, and that the lack of quality sleep leads to increased cyberloafing.

How Do I Nail the Next Interview Round

How Do I Nail the Next Interview Round How Do I Nail the Next Interview Round You nailed the first interview â€" now what? How to prepare for subsequent interview rounds.Question:  Could you please share with me the best things to remember going into an interview? I’ve had 3 face-to-face, and feel like the one coming up next week is the one! â€" Ron D., Lakeview, NYAnswer:  Congratulations Ron, it sounds like your job search is going well. Many people struggle with maintaining momentum throughout the interview process. Here are a few things to keep in mind for your final interview rounds.Show your cultural fit.Once you’ve proven that you have the right skill set and experience for the job, shift your focus to showcasing how you are a cultural fit. If hired, will you fit in with the team and thrive? Will you be around for the long run?To find out about a company’s culture before your interview, visit sites such as Glassdoor.com and Vault.com, in addition to the company’s corporate site. Additionally, search your network to see if you know anyone who wor ks (or has worked) at the organization and take those people out for a cup of coffee to pick their brain.Prepare for negotiations.I always advise clients to tactfully avoid talking dollars and cents for as long as possible. You want enough interview time to first prove what a value-add you are for the company, so that when they make an offer, you’re no longer just a line item in the budget. You’re a potential contributor. That being said, you should always be prepared for the conversation. Research competitive salary information for the position using resources such as PayScale  and Salary.com, and calculate the total value of your last compensation package. Use that information to develop a compensation range that includes the lowest amount you’d accept and the highest number you think you could ask for within reason. Consider all tangible and intangible benefits that are important to you â€" this could include salary, signing bonus, commission, car allowance, travel budget, training or continued education. If you have the time, I highly recommend checking out Jack Chapman’s articles on negotiation and his book, “Negotiating Your Salary: How to Make $1,000 a Minute.” His information is easy to understand and incredibly helpful in the salary negotiation process.

Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now What

Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now What Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now What Being unemployed, especially around the holidays, is rough. But it could get even harder   in the Big Apple. Come the end of December federal unemployment assistance will run out for New York unless an emergency extension is issued. The New York economy could lose as many as 40,500 jobs in 2011 without the extension, the White House Council of Economic Advisers reported yesterday.   This legislation could, in turn, create a job loss domino effect. Fewer jobs means less money put back into the economy, resulting in even fewer jobs, and so on and so forth. The start of what many call the ” vicious cycle of unemployment.” Jobless claims are certainly not limited to New York. Across the country the economy continues to suffer. There are   steps to take that can help you avoid unemployment potholes   no matter where you are located. For New Yorkers, State Labor Commissioner Colleen Gardner says, “The unemployed should still file claims with the Labor Department,” just to keep a continuous record. On the job-seeking front career experts suggest making the most of your unemployment by taking on “contract or temporary work,” which will help you stay current in your field, and show employers that you have not been idle since your last permanent, full-time job, said Cheryl Palmer, president of executive-coaching firm Call to Career in Ladders article How I Spent My Unemployment. All of the experts seem to agree that when it comes to unemployment, either benefits or joblessness, maintaining continuity is key. Nursing Assistant Skills List

Nursing Assistant Skills List Nursing Assistant Skills List Nursing assistants have a wide range of responsibilities encompassing many duties, from pain management and infection control to creating a safe healthcare environment. Personal skills range from sound judgment to maintaining respectful bedside manner. Nursing assistants work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN), usually in a hospital or a long-term care setting. They have to complete a post-secondary training program and go through a certification process. Although you don’t need a degree to be a nursing assistant, relevant degree programs do exist and will both help prepare you for the work and make you more competitive against other entry-level candidates. Nursing Assistant Duties A nursing assistant’s duties revolve mostly around the basic daily physical care of patients and associated record keeping. You might help patients use the bathroom or take care of other sanitary needs. You might feed patients who cannot feed themselves, turn bed-ridden patients to prevent pressure sores, transport patients, and help ambulatory patients walk. You might also change dressings, help with surgical prep, check vital signs and weight, and perform a basic urinalysis. If a patient summons help, you’ll be the one to find out what they need. You’ll have to keep proper records of everything you do and you’ll have to pass on your observations of your patients to your supervisor. You will also be responsible for maintaining your work at all applicable professional and legal standards.? Examples of Nursing Assistant Skills Nursing assistant skills fall into two main categories, technical and interpersonal. The technical skills are more obviously medical and more specific to nursing. Interpersonal skills, in contrast, are hardly unique to nurses but are critically important to their work. Basic Medical Knowledge You will not be a doctor, but you do have to understand biological and physiological issues, including common disorders and diseases. You need to understand infectious diseases and how to prevent the spread of infection. You need to understand what’s going on with your patients, and if somebody suddenly presents with dangerous symptoms, you need to notice so you can get help. Basic Medical Techniques Nursing assistants will usually observe and record vital signs, including respiration, body temperature, pulse, and blood pressure. You should also know how to change dressings properly and maintain patient safety and personal hygiene. Empathy and Compassion Empathy and compassion are seldom thought of as skills, but you can practice and develop them. You cannot be an effective nursing assistant if you do not care about your patients as human beings. Experiencing empathy and expressing compassion will make for a happier career as a nursing assistant, and will make you overall much better at your job. If you have an innately hard time embodying these qualities, the role of a nursing assistant might not be for you. Time Management and Organization Medical facilities can become chaotic if staff are not careful. Patient needs can become backlogged and an entire facility can run on a time deficit, raising everyones workload, if time isnt managed and tasks arent well organized. You will be responsible for keeping yourself on track, and you may also be responsible for keeping colleagues and bosses in line with organization practices and on schedule. Attention to Detail Not only must you do all your patient care techniques correctly every time, but if a patient’s health goes in the wrong direction, you should notice. Even small changes in a patient can indicate a problem, like a change in pupil dilation, breath odor, or personal habit, for example. You should be comfortable with and aware of the small details. Communication Skills Not only must you document everything thoroughly, clearly, and correctly, you should also be just as strong in your verbal communications. Interactions with doctors, other medical and nursing staff, patients, and their families will certainly be an integral part of any nursing assistant job. 10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave

10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave 10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave 10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave It’s essential to plan ahead when negotiating maternity leave. Here’s how. From the nursery to the lack of sleep to the type of delivery you'll have, there are so many things to plan for when there's a new baby on the way. On top of all that, you also need to determine how long you'd like to be away from work to care for your new baby. Negotiating maternity leave takes some education and planning. A well-thought-out approach to requesting leave can increase your chances of being approved for an extended leave if you end up needing one. Below are some tips to help you generate your plan of action so you can enjoy your new baby without worrying about having to return to work too early. Research and understand your company's leave policies By law, organizations that meet certain criteria (50 or more employees living within a 50-mile radius) have to offer up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to eligible employees to care for the birth of a child or an adoption. Some organizations, however, offer additional maternity leave that might be paid or unpaid. Many organizations will pay for leave up until the doctor releases you to return to work, which is typically six weeks for a natural delivery and eight weeks for a cesarean delivery. The remaining leave might be unpaid, or some companies allow you to use paid personal or vacation time for the remainder of your leave. Depending on your organization, this leave might dip into your FMLA leave, which is the norm from my experience. Some organizations will also allow employees to take a personal leave of absence for a specified period. You need to research and get clear on your company's policies and how much leave is possible for you to take based on the standard company policy. Ask your human resources department about the organization's maternity-leave policy and how everything works, as well. From there, you can determine how much additional time you might need, if any. To read more about employer requirements and employee eligibility requirement for FMLA, refer to DOL Fact Sheet # 28: The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 and the DOL Family and Medical Leave Act web page. Check in with other expecting or new moms When you're pregnant, other expecting moms and new moms can make great allies in general. You're all entering a new stage of your life that will surely bring surprises, joy, new challenges, and so much more. If you can connect with another mom who is close to giving birth, just gave birth, or just returned to work after maternity leave, you can ask them about how they negotiated maternity leave and what they received. This could help you in determining the minimum leave you could go in asking for, and can also provide moral support in requesting what you need in general. Go in with a plan and be clear on what you're requesting Go into the meeting with all the information you need, including research on who you're negotiating with, so you know how to navigate the meeting based on their style or history with the matter. The more prepared you are, the better able you'll be to make your case in negotiating maternity leave. Before requesting leave, or even bringing up the subject, get clear on how much time you'd like to take, and plan for more than you think you might need. It's better to come back early than to request an extension when you realize your desire to have more time to spend with your newborn. Also, try to come from a benefit to the company approach versus an exception to policy approach the latter is often an uncomfortable stance for companies. There's a lot of decent research that shows that organizations that offer maternity leave to new moms have a higher retention rate. The National Partnership for Women Families has published some good statistics on offering paid leave in a 2015 Fact Sheet, Paid Family and Medical Leave: Good for Business. You can share this type of info with your manager to support your case. Leave your desk in good hands When you're requesting leave, it can help if your manager knows you're willing to check in every so often to keep him or her up to date on your status. Checking in does not imply that you agree to do any work, as you want to be careful not to make that commitment unless you truly want to. However, it can provide peace of mind to your manager that you're still in the game and plan to return to work. Going to your manager with a detailed plan of action and coverage while you're out will help ease his or her mind about how your work will be covered and by whom. It will also help you prepare for your leave with less stress knowing all your bases will be covered while you're out. The more you can show that you're leaving major projects and day-to-day activities and tasks in good hands, the better. Offer to attend important meetings If you can manage, it might help you score a win if you offer to come in for important meetings that are on the schedule. For example, if there's major project-planning meeting or a big vendor meeting and you're an account manager, you can offer to attend those meetings while on leave, assuming you're available and well enough to do so. Maybe consider calling in for the meetings as well. Consider part-time work I have a couple of friends who decided to return to work part time after each of their second children were born. This allowed them to remain in the good graces of the company while also having more time to stay at home with their children. If you can afford to and you know you'd like more time, find out if this might be an option for you. Going from leave to part time to full time later down the road is also a great way to ease back into the workplace after having a child, especially because going back at full speed can be a difficult transition for many. Be ready to renegotiate There's a good chance you might not get everything you ask for, so be ready to negotiate and come up with alternative solutions to support your leave. Related:7 Powerful Ways You Can Improve Your Negotiation Skills Keep things in perspective It's not always easy to get additional leave, especially if it's outside of policy or the policy states it's at the discretion of management. When negotiating maternity leave, know this going in and give it your best shot. Again, the more prepared and clear you are about what you need, the better. Also, if the organization is short on staff, is a newer organization, or you've had recent poor reviews or disciplinary action, all of these factors might impact whether or not you're approved. Keep your priorities in mind When negotiating for maternity leave, it can be helpful to keep in mind what your priorities are. For most who are starting or growing a family, it's their children. We tend to have more regrets when we don't make choices or take a stand for the things that are important to us. That's not to say that work is not a priority because it is for many, but not more of a priority than their children, especially newborns. Making money to feed those children is also a priority, of course. My point is that it's OK to ask for extra time to spend with your newborn if that's a priority for you, because if you don't, you might feel regret that you didn't at least try. Though you might not get approved for everything you ask for, you can feel good knowing you spoke up out of respect for yourself and your priorities about what you needed. Before negotiating maternity leave, get a sense for the list above, and think through your personal circumstances and the organization you work for. Then decide what will be best for you. Creation Agency CEO on what is going to make or break your sales team

Creation Agency CEO on what is going to make or break your sales team Creation Agency CEO on what is going to make or break your sales team Ladders recently spoke with Jack Kosakowski, CEO of Creation Agency U.S. and leading expert on social selling and sales innovation, on what attracted him to the industry, key steps for salespeople when it comes to cold contacting, sales and marketing convergence, and more. Read on below.  What initially attracted you to the field of sales?  Growing up I had the honor to travel around with my grandfather and watch him light a sales room on fire. He was in charge of the #1 sales organization at a company called Masterguard. Essentially, I was raised to be a salesman by what I regard as the best salesman that ever lived. My goal is to carry on his legacy in the field of sales.  How important of a role does technology play in the sales field and specifically in your work?  Technology is going to make or break your sales team in the digital age. It is the key driver for productivity and helping turn targeted insights into targeted sales conversations. It is the only way to identify the ri ght people, to have the right conversation at the right time.  Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Jack Kosakowski  Please tell me a little about your role at Creation Agency and what makes it unique.Creation Agency is unique in the fact that we are true marketing and sales practitioners who come and help high-growth companies design and execute innovative demand generation strategies from real-time experience. We follow a model called “Your Marketing Team As A Service.” We don’t just tell you what you should be doing, we actually do it for you.  What technology/innovation/platform has had the most profound effect on the field of sales and marketing in the past year or two, and why?  Marketing automation platforms like Hubspot and Marketo are game changers in my opinion. Very few companies understand how to set them up in a way that actually helps them move the needle, b ut the ones who do are going to win long-term. These platforms can help align sales and marketing activities and help fill the gap which is huge for capitalizing on real opportunities.  What are the biggest challenges, from a technical and/or business standpoint, that those in sales face nowadays?  Most sales teams are not equipped to utilize social channels as their competitive advantage for communication. Buyers want to control where and how they communicate. Very few salespeople understand how to give them the communication experience that leads to the sale.  What are your thoughts on content marketing? Does it play a prevalent role in your work at Creation Agency?Content marketing is a tricky one. Most companies are not creating content that actually helps the business move the needle. 80% of Creation Agency’s new business comes through referrals and content. We are very strategic about who creates content and even more strategic about how that content is distributed. Deliveri ng content from an executive inside your organization is the new way of communicating that leads to the highest conversions. Most companies still don’t get that.  Do you feel the worlds of sales and marketing are converging, and if so, is this a good thing? Or should they remain their own distinct fields? Please explain.  Yes, they are essentially becoming one in the same. What is the difference between prospecting and lead generation? That is a question you should be asking yourself? Is there one? Not really.  What are the key steps that salespeople should take when it comes to cold calling/emailing?There is so much semantics around the argument of cold calling in the digital age. It is just that… Semantics. Cold calling isn’t dead. It is being reinvented by the amount of information that salespeople now have access to. The phone is still alive. It is how you get someone on the phone and how you start the conversation that is the key using digital channels as your touch point s.What has been the most satisfying moment of your career/proudest career achievement, and why?Building a team and watching the agency grow is my proudest career achievement. 3.5 years ago it was just me by a computer trying to figure out how to get my first client. Now, I have a team of 13 people and we help some of the fastest growing saas companies scale. It puts a smile on my face every day. I love our clients, employees, and the challenge of the work we do. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Study Fiber intake is at an alarmingly low level in America

Study Fiber intake is at an 'alarmingly low' level in America Study Fiber intake is at an 'alarmingly low' level in America The impact fiber has in keeping us regulated is pretty well established, but literature highlighting the role fiber plays in preventing heart disease and certain types of cancer is pretty abundant as well.A review of 58 clinical trials, 4,635 individuals and over 180 studies conducted by  The Lancet  published in January,  explored the specific benefits of a diet that does not severely limit the intake of fiber. The data yielded a 15-30% risk decrease to all-cause cardiovascular-related mortality, alongside decreases of type 2 diabetes and stroke incidences.  A study conducted in 2013, revealed that dietary fiber is associated with both lower weight and gut health.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Despite this, only 5% of Americans are meeting their daily fiber requirements according to a recent study published in The American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. The Institute of M edicine recommends men take in 38 grams of fiber a day, and women take in 25 grams of fiber a day- with some dietary nutritionists, like  Autumn Kumlien for instance, suggesting we adjust these measurements slightly as we age.  According to Kumlien, for men and women over the age of 51, the daily amount should land somewhere around 30 and 21 grams respectively.A study published in the Journal Of Nutrition reports, “Current fiber intakes are alarmingly low, with long-term implications for public health related to risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, certain gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, and the continuum of metabolic dysfunctions including prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.”Variations of FiberBefore you proceed with incorporating more fiber into your diet it’s important that you have an understanding of the different variations and their role in a healthy balanced meal.  For health purposes, fiber is generally categorized in these four ways: dietary/ funct ional fiber and soluble/insoluble fiber.Dietary fiber is the kind of fiber found organically in foods like fruits and vegetables. Functional fiber is fiber that is extracted and then added to processed foods or dietary supplements later.  Soluble fiber refers to a fiber that mixes with water in our gastrointestinal tract, while insoluble fiber refers to a fiber that does not.Foods like flax seeds, oatmeal, nuts, and lintels are rich in soluble fibers. The gel-like substance that is born out of the water/fiber blend has been  shown to help diminish spikes in blood sugar in addition to precluding cholesterol absorption and hindering movement of glucose in our blood.Soluble fibers delay the stomach emptying process, making us feel full for much longer which, in turn, makes us consume fewer calories.Whole grains, vegetables, and wheat bran, on the other hand, contain insoluble fibers that promote positive laxative effects. The bulking process initiated by insoluble fibers speeds up the passage of stool, effectively decreasing instances of constipation, hemorrhoids, and diverticulitis. Many high-fiber foods also come with additional health benefits.  Pears for example, which pack 5.5 grams of fiber on average, also help ward off free radicals involved with skin aging. Avocados, everyone’s favorite vitamin C/magnesium rich superfood, are additionally high in fiber and have also been linked to decreased risks for both cancer and depression.Simply put, a balanced diet needs to incorporate a sufficient amount of fiber. Fiber keeps us regular,  is instrumental in the prevention of a myriad of heart maladies, and  curbs habits that lead to weight gain. Moreover, the way fiber slows down  the movement of glucose in our bloodstream impedes frequent energy crashes associated with sugar spikes. In other words, fiber does a body good. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
