7 Signs Your Work-Life Balance is Broken

7 Signs Your Work-Life Balance is Broken7 Signs Your Work-Life Balance is BrokenThis is the problem. The topic of having a work-life balance is not new to the United States, yet some cannot strike that perfect balance between work and life.Work-life balance has been broken in the USA for over 200 years, As this CNBC article showed in 2017, way back in 1817 a Welsh manufacturer and labor rights activist Robert Owens coined the phrase, Eight hours labor, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest.By 1890, when the US Government started tracking work hours, it was discovered full-time workers in manufacturing were pulling 100-hour work weeks. Now over 100 years later, and after a 20th century of reformed work conditions and labor union growth, todays world of changing technology is increasing the demand for productivity.Once again, work-life balance is very important. Americans are working an average of 50 hours a week. Employees intech and finance average 60 hours. Doctors are discoverin g the damaging effects of stress on the menschenwrdig body while 1 in 3 Americans complain their work-life balance is broken.Learn to see the signs that your work-life balance is broken.1. You can no longer play hard after workChronic health issues are causing you to live life like a hermit outside of work. Even when you try to stay fit, eat right, and exercise, for some reason your body is quitting on you. This is a sign your body is feeling overworked and it is affecting your life.2. You can never get enough sleepYou get 8-hours a night of sleep and it never seems to matter. The weekend rolls around and you want to sleep more. Sometimes, you may even fall asleep in your chair at work. This is a sign your brain is burning out and overloaded.3. You have 0% patience for everythingAs work-life balance slips away, your abilities to lose your temper and hold grudges increases. Before you know it, everyone and everything that gets in the way of your job turns into a personal grudge. Your work-life balance has slipped away and you are in danger of becoming toxic to your own workplace.4. All of your relationships are disappearingYou know more about your co-workers than you do about the recent events in your familys lives. Your friends and family complain they never see you and it seems your weekends are spent just trying to recover from the work week. And your spouse starts complaining he/she never sees you. You have all the signs you need to make a work-life balance change.5. You use your phone in bed at nightYou have endless connectivity to work because of your iPhone or Smartphone. People who work after-hours are asking questions. If you are in bed and think you should start working, your work-life balance is in trouble. You cannot platzdeckchen the boundary between work and life, but you need sleep.6. Your priorities are out of whackWhen you have no understanding of how to prioritize work, physical and mental health, family, and finance, it is time to stop what y ou are doing and think. Ironically, as much as Apples Steve Jobs influenced that tech community working 60+ hours a week, many ignore his final words of regret for living a life in the pursuit of wealthWhat is the most expensive bed in the world? Sickbed You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you. Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost - Life. - Steve Jobs7. You are an uncompromising perfectionistWe all want to feel successful. However, when you find you can no longer stand for an opinion from another, or your failures make you so depressed and filled with anxiety that you cannot function, your work-life balance has taken its toll.Getting control of your work-life balance is necessary. You may want to consider working in a less stressful industry. You may be very good at what you do, but your endless drive for perfection may cause you to lose all the things you worked to achieve due to the destructive behaviors caused by a broken work-life balance.

10 ways to face a mental creativity block right now

10 ways to face a mental creativity lager right now10 ways to face a mental creativity block right nowAt some point, you hit a creative mental block that leaves you caught in a cycle of frustration and desperation that simply compounds the problem. Mental blocks are typically the result of stress or a loss of focus. Luckily, there are many ways that you can face a mental block head on and enhance your creative thinking process.1. Get it down on paperJournaling, specifically a process known asfreewriting, uses the act of writing to encourage you to clear your mind of clutter and allowing you to focus. Freewriting is simply writing whatever comes to mind down on paper whether it relates to your creative pursuits or not. Then, you can go back and sift through your writing to pull out the parts that are relevant or inspirational.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIf writing isnt your t hing, a sketchbook can provide you with a similar experience. Sketch out your ideas, try new color combinations or techniques without constraint. You can also use your sketchbook as a source of inspiration if a mental block occurs again.2. Go back to natureNature has long been a source of inspiration for creative thinkers, but beyond this, nature can help you break through creative mentalblocks by removing the distractions of everyday life and allowing your mind to wander and make associations you may not have considered. Studies suggest that even 30 minutes spent outside can have a significant effect on your mood and thinking patterns. Nature also offers the best color palette to help calm a noisy mind.If you cant get outside, bring nature into your creative space. Plants, crystals and gemstones in soothing natural tones can create a calming atmosphere and reduce stress. They also offer plenty of other health benefits such as purifying the air.3. Move moreThere is a reason they say that a healthy mind lives in a healthy body. Exercise forces you to make a strong mind-body connection which allows you to become present and mindful. Both are important factors in boosting creativity. Exercise also causes your body to release the hormones serotonin and dopamine which elicit feelings of euphoria and well-being and reduce fear and stress.Make exercise a regular part of your daily routine. Do exercises you enjoy and are comfortable doing, whether that is a morning yoga session, laps at the pool or lifting weights.4. Try something newScience suggests that creativity occurs when the brain makes connections between unrelated concepts. One way to break through a creative mental block is to increase your neural pathwaysand one of the best ways to do this is to learn something new.Try learning something unrelated to your field. The more repetitive the task, the faster your brain will make new connections.Jewelry-makingis a great way to combine creativity with focused attent ion or you can boost the creative side of your brain by learning a new language.5. Tune inMusic has the power to affect how we think and feel, and businesses are increasingly using music to improve productivity and creativity. However, not all music will do the trick.Different musical styles and sounds promote activity in different areas of the brain. Music with specific soothing notes can boost serotonin levels in the brain and relieve depression, while other tones can improve alertness.Hemi sync musicis said to boost brain waves which have been associated withdecreased stress and increased creativity.6. Tune OutMindful meditation has become common practice in business as a way to eliminate stress, but it also has a significant impact on your creativity. The key to meditation is to tune out the background noise that can clutter your thinking and enhance the important factors that contribute to creative thoughtlateral thinking, focus and resilience.Studies suggest that even 10 minu tes of mindful meditation can help eliminate a creative block. But, if you think that you cant set aside time for meditation, one of the best places to practice mindful meditation is in the shower.Shower meditationtakes only 5 minutes out of your busy morning and can prepare you for a productive day of creative thinking.7. Get boredIt may sound counterintuitive however, sometimes doing the least creative tasks can stimulate the most creative thinking. If you are suffering a mental block, take a break to perform some menial tasks around the house or office.Do the dishes, vacuum the floor or organize your inbox. Any task that does not require too much thought will leave your mind free to look at your creative problems from a new perspective, and the feeling of accomplishing these small tasks can give you the momentum you need to get over this creative hurdle.8. Change your environmentThe jury is still out on whether clutter helps or hinders your creative process. Some studies suggest that a messy desk can stimulate creative thinking, while other studies concluded that a clutter-free environment is better for boosting focus. It has even been shown that certain stones, like Amethyst, help produce mental clarity. Whatever the state of your environment, changing, organizing or tidying your creative space can have a positive impact on your creativity.Try changing the position of items on your desk or removing them altogether. Take your work to a different location such as a coffee shop or a local park. Simply changing your environment can give you a changed mindset and may give you a different perspective on your creative problem.9. Take a tech detoxTechnology is a huge part of our lives, but more studies are suggesting that excessive exposure to technology can overstimulate our brains and increase our stress levels. Give your brain some downtime by taking a tech detox.Unplug your TV and computer, leave your phone in another room and find a space where you can think w ithout distractions. Regular tech detoxes can improve mental processing and improve your concentration to enhance your creativity. It can also help you sleep better which, in turn, can help you to regulate the stress hormones in your body.10. Talk it overA problem shared is a problem halved. Simply talking about your creative block with another like-minded person can help you to feel less pressure and consequently less stress.Talking can also stimulate new ideas and give you a fresh perspective on your creative problem. If your creative block is affecting your work, consider working collaboratively with another colleague to help share the physical and mental load.Final thoughtsDont let a creative mental block stand in the way of you producing amazing ideas. Try some of these simple methods to clear away the clutter in your mind and get those creative juices flowing. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

4 Ways You Can Stand Out in the Job Market That AI Cant

4 Ways You Can Stand Out in the Job Market That AI Cant4 Ways You Can Stand Out in the Job Market That AI CantTheres so much uncertainty about how artificial intelligence (AI) will affect the way people find work and advance in their careers. Humanity Works Merging Technologies and People for the Workforce of the Future, the latest book by Alexandra Levit, focuses on the traits of humans, elend on technology. Lets look at a few ways professionals can stand out from AI to remain competitive and valuable in the workplace. Here are some of Levits suggestions on competing with small machines1. Rely on emotional intelligence.Levit said professionals must develop the skills they need to compete with small machines namely empathy, intuition, judgment, and interpersonal sensitivity. Machines arent programmed for emotional intelligence. Only humans can employ these attributes without relying on anyone to process it.Despite the positive business side of automation, the human role is not disappe aring. After all, it took humans to build and program the software and the machine. Develop these necessary skills to show your value.2. Be vigilant of how technology is changing your career industrys landscape. We experience how shortcuts and ease are the catalyst for change every day. Perhaps not for every change, but the indicating factors seem to equal saving money and time. Through awareness, you can remain competitive and align with the trends.Levit says, Professionals can prepare by reading the writing on the wall and noting the aspects of their jobs most likely to be automated, and get ahead of it by reskilling into areas where human expertise and traits are still required. They will be more successful in the contract workforce if they practice taking on new types of assignments in their current organizations, especially cross-functional ones, and work diligently on their personal brand and marketing.3. Present this one skill to stand out. While skills are a dime a dozen in so me industries, Levit says integrity is the one skill professionals can set themselves apart from their competition integrity is one of the most critical traits a job seeker at any level can display. I think this is only going to become more important as candidates have more access to technology and systems that may be able to more easily misrepresent qualifications and abilities.4. Be open to the extinction of one full-time job.The idea of having one full-time job to meet all of your financial and career advancement is slowly dissipating, although it still exists. Levit says, Full-time work wont be a thing of the past anytime soon, but it will become less common and more professionals will be thrust into the contract workforce whether they like it or not. I think a majority of contract workers WILL work 2+ gigs at once. This will be essential to earn a living. And yes, many will find it difficult to balance new business development with existing work and other obligations. The idea o f todays professional being a business of one has come to life. The constant marketing, contracting, and negotiating of yourself no longer refers to storefront businesses. This is the 2019 and beyond careerist- the professional who will need to strategize, execute, and obtain their next opportunities while finishing their current one. Levit says she sees it happening already A recent study by QuickBase illustrated that todays professionals want to choose the technology they use to do their jobs and having this choice is a major factor in the jobs they decide to take. Organizations employing all types of professionals need to become more flexible and trusting of workers when it comes to the best technology available to get the job done.Mark Anthony Dyson is The Voice of Job Seekers Hes a career consultant, job seeker advocate, career writer, and founder of the award-winning blog and podcast, The Voice of Job Seekers. How to Show Passion in a Job Interview 4 Tips Tricks

How to Show Passion in a Job Interview 4 Tips Tricks How to Show Passion in a Job Interview 4 Tips Tricks 2Employers obviously evaluate credentials such as education and work history when thinking about whom to hire. But dont discount the value of a factor not as cut and dry, but perhaps equally beneficial- showing passion in a job interview.Passion is just as, if not more, important as experience in a job interview, says Kristen J. Zavo, author of Job Joy Your Guide to Success, Happiness, and Meaning in Your Career. Thats because showing that youve got genuine interest in the industry, company, and role means that youll do what it takes to be successful because you actually care and are internally motivated.Smart candidates do more than simply toss the word passion around. They find memorable, yet tactful, ways to show and demonstrate passion in a job interview.Ready to show your passion in a job interview? Try these strategiesStart off strong.Zavo recommends displaying passion fr om the get-go with a thoughtful answer to the obligatory interview question, Tell me about yourself.Sharing your education, experience, and skills in a way that both shows your excitement and positions you as the optimal candidate for the job is key to instilling confidence in the interviewer, she says.Instead of just stating that youve been interested in a career path, paint a vivid picture. For example, if youre interviewing for architectural jobs, recount how youve been intrigued by building design ever since Santa left a bucket of Legos under the tree when you were five. Detail why your internship with Architectural Firm XYZ welches the highlight of your college honors program. Mention how the look on the new residents faces as they opened the door to a home you helped build with Habitat for Humanity increased your commitment to affordable housing issues. Listeners will note a pattern of passion to kick off your interview.Ask great questions.People who care about a subject want to know as much as possible about it. Asking why the company adopted a new advertising plan or soliciting the interviewer for their thoughts on why the firm recently was named to a list of great places to work demonstrates admirable curiosity. Such detailed questions also show youve done your homework- another sign of a passionate candidate.Go the extra mile. For people who are passionate about what they do, going above and beyond often comes naturally. Hiring managers cant help but notice genuine actions, so dont be afraid to be yourself.Sean Pour, cofounder of the nationwide car buying service SellMax, remembers interviewing a candidate for a position as a call center agent. We were asking the normal questions about her experience. She was nice and smart, but we still had others to interview, he says. As they were wrapping up, however, she pulled something out of her purse- a cared-for collection of toy cars that she had since childhood. She told the interviewers that she and her fa ther bonded through cars when she was growing up, she always wanted to be involved in the industry but was not mechanically inclined, and she saw this position as a perfect fit. After seeing the prop and her clear passion for the industry, I hired her right on the spot. I knew that if she was so passionate about the job, she would do well, and she did, Pour says.Reiterate interest afterward.Lastly, solidify your passion as the real deal with an impressive follow-up. A heartfelt thank-you note displays gratitude as well as provides further opportunity to share something about yourself or your excitement about the position.Or, perhaps, try something like this action that drew the attention of Carolina King, chief people officer for the executive search firm Lucas GroupOne recent candidate really impressed me with their passion in a follow-up email exchange. The initial interview went well, and we gave him feedback that we wanted to proceed with him but had a few more interviews we plan ned to conduct. He wrote a response with the subject line call off the search, you have already found the right hire, and he included a 90-day plan for the role. This showed enthusiasm, a purposeful plan, and a sense of humor that immediately landed him the roleDemonstrating your passion in an interviewcan really set you apart from the competition. Let employers know youre personally motivated and interested in the role and company by utilizing the tips above.Looking to improve your interviewing skills? Debunking Interview Mistakes - Spark Hire

Debunking Interview Mistakes - Spark HireIn a competitive job market, any reason to eliminate a candidate from the ocean-sized applicant pool can be tempting. Enter the classic list of bewerberinterview mistakes that candidates are never supposed to make being late unprofessional dress speaking poorly of a former babo the list goes on. However, are these actually good reasons to cross a candidate off your list? After all life happens sometimes you dont know what to wear and sometimes you really did work for a crazy person. Lets take a look at some classic interview sins, and rethink the severity of the crimes.LatenessBeing late usually tops the list of fatal interview mistakes. This is understandable. Things may not bode well for a candidate who cannot manage to be on time for one very important appointment. However, it is important to remember that punctuality can be affected by many things outside of a candidates control. Bad luck like car trouble, road conditions, and even oversl eeping can happen to anyone. These things dont reflect on the candidates competency or commitment to success at your company. Bad luck means the candidate is human. When trying to decide whether to forgive this interview mistake, consider the candidates explanation for being late. Also consider whether or not he/she called ahead to let you know about the impending tardiness.Inappropriate DressThis interview mistake cant be passed off so easily as schwimmbad luck. Professional appearance is very important in many workplaces, especially when client interaction is involved. Personal appearance is one good way to judge a candidates judgment. However, wardrobe is also subjective and (lets be honest) superficial. Rules for a professional wardrobe are debatable since they differ by industry and by company. Even an overly conservative approach might not fare as well in certain kinds of artistic fields. So, if a candidate misses the mark on your company dress code, consider cutting him/her s ome slack. Remember that we teach kids not to judge a book by its cover. You might be missing out on an otherwise competent employee.Criticism of a Former EmployerThis is perhaps the cardinal sin of job interviews. Every job interview candidate on the planet is warned away from criticizing their former employer, even if they deserve it. This alone may be enough to consider dumping any candidate who makes this mistake. And, to be fair, bashing an old boss is not a very professional thing to do. However, consider all of the havoc that a bad boss can wreak on a persons professional life. A candidate trying to land a new job may have a very difficult time explaining a termination or abrupt resignation without explaining a negative situation with their former boss. Complaining and over-sharing about prior management is rude. Cogently explaining a bad situation shouldnt be such a problem. After all, most of us have worked for mediocre to bad bosses beforewhy pretend that they dont exist?T hese are my opinions on some common interview mistakes. What are yours? Turns out the gig economy is actually shrinking

Turns out the gig economy is actually shrinkingTurns out the gig economy is actually shrinkingIt seems like the gig economy is booming, with much talk in the media about the death of the regular job, and seemingly everyone freelancing and driving for Uber. But two recent reports one from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), published last year, and one from the Economic Policy Institute, published in February show that the contingent work market is actually declining.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe Economic Policy Institute (EPI) data covered a ten-year period, from 2005-2017. The report measures contingent work as a contract employee or temporary help, independent contracting, or day labor work. The changes toward voreingestellt work and away from contingent work were gradual, yet real and noticeable. In 2005, the total percentage of the labor force working in nonvoreinges tellt work arrangements was 10.9%. In 2017, it was 10.1%. By comparison, the previous BLS report had similar percentages. The independent contractor workforce is getting increasingly older, and older workers were more likely to be independent contractors than any other age group in both 2005 and 2017. Still, they also saw a decline. Independent workers between the ages of 55-64 went from 10.8% in 2005 to 9.3% in 2017.Between 2005 and 2017, the percentage of workers who were independent contractors fell from 7.4% to 6.9%.Other findingsThe most popular segment of contingent work? Anti-trustworthy

Anti-trustworthyAnti-trustworthyThe Paper of Record concedes its a slow news day by running, top right above the fold, a look at the latest doings of the DOJs Antitrust Division. Interesting reading for legal news geeks nonetheless the efforts of Obamas top trustbuster, Christine Varney, a former Hogan Hartson partner and Clinton-era FTC commissioner, to rein in a host of major industries are reportedly so aggressive that she is getting pushback from within the administration. (The phone call is coming from inside the house? Well, the leaks are coming from inside the White House) Among the industries in Varneys crosshairs telecoms, airlines, railroads (?), and at the special request of Vermonts Bernie Sandersthose BigMilk nogoodniks. The article also has some vague details about what or who the DOJ is leid going after In connection to the White House effort to overhaul financial regulation, officials weighed but rejected a significant antitrust role as a way to reduce the size of la rge companies considered too big to be allowed to fail.Meaning, the DOJ was considering breaking up some banks, but then decided against. Or, alternatively, the DOJ was considering a more expansive definition of too big to fail, but then bagged it. Or something else entirely Hard to say, move along. -posted by brian

Changing Your Clocks for Daylight Saving Time

Changing Your Clocks for Daylight Saving Time Changing Your Clocks for Daylight Saving Time Each year, the exact dates for instituting and ending daylight saving time change, but in the United States, it begins at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. The concept  was designed to extend daylight later into the evening during the summer months by pushing clocks forward during that part of the year, usually by one hour. With the exception of countries near the equator, most nations of the world use some form of daylight saving time or have done so in the past. When to Change Your Clocks Its easy to remember which way to change the clock by remembering that you spring forward in the spring and fall back in the fall.  Specifically, you reset your clocks from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. when daylight saving time begins and reset them from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. when it ends. This chart provides beginning and ending dates for daylight saving time through 2032. Daylight Saving Time Calendar Dates Year Begins Ends 2019 March 10 November 3 2020 March 8 November 1 2021 March 14 November 7 2022 March 13 November 6 2023 March 12 November 5 2024 March 10 November 3 2025 March 9 November 2 2026 March 8 November 1 2027 March 14 November 7 2028 March 12 November 5 2029 March 11 November 4 2030 March 10 November 3 2031 March 9 November 2 2032 March 14 November 7 Why Do We Have Daylight Saving Time? Benjamin Franklin first broached the subject of moving clocks to take advantage of summer daylight in a 1784 essay. The idea did not take hold, though, until World War I, beginning with Germanys efforts to save fuel by moving clocks ahead one hour. The logic was that the more daylight people had later into the evening, the less energy they would need to use for artificial light. The idea spread throughout Europe, and the U.S. enacted a law in 1918 that established daylight saving time in addition to standardizing time zones. During World War II, the U.S. expanded daylight saving time to the full year. Then, after the conclusion of the war, there was no federal law, and states and local municipalities could make their own decisions about observing daylight saving time. This, not surprisingly, wreaked havoc with transportation schedules, broadcast schedules, and more, leading to a federal standard again being adopted in 1966. States still can exempt themselves from daylight saving time if their legislatures pass a law choosing not to follow it. As of 2018, Arizona and Hawaii do not observe daylight saving time. Why 2 A.M.? Changing clocks at 2 a.m. might seem like a strange and arbitrary time, but a logical argument exists for why that time was chosen. Its an hour with a limited number of activities that would be impacted during the time clocks are changed. Most businesses are closed, and buses and trains have minimal demand at that hour. Additionally, using 2 a.m. as the designated time prevents the confusion of a time change that would shift back to the previous day. Regardless, few people actually change their clocks at precisely 2 a.m. Most people switch their clocks before they go to bed the night before the change. Increasingly, technology is making it so that people dont have to do anything to change clocks. While some timepieces certainly still need to be changed manually, computers, cell phones, smart watches, cars, and appliances all can be programmed to make the change automatically at the appropriate time. Opposition to Daylight Saving Time Though the practice has become accepted, daylight saving time still has its share of critics. Farmers, in particular, generally start their day based on when the sun rises, which happens later in the day- according to the clock- when daylight saving time is in effect. In an article on webexhibits.org, a farmer notes that his livestock does not recognize that it is supposed to be an hour later or an hour earlier. Parents of schoolchildren also frequently criticized daylight saving time because it reduces available daylight in the morning at the beginning and at the end of the school year. The result is that children often are expected to walk to school or to bus stops during times of heavy traffic when it is still dark outside. Dayling saving time sometimes leads to confusion that can have consequences ranging from disastrous to amusing. In 1999, three Palestinian terrorists presumably blew themselves up because their targets in Israel had changed their clocks for the winter. Not realizing the difference in time led to the bombs detonating while they still were being transported to their destinations. On the lighter side, the time change can create inconsistencies with the birth certificates of twins if one is born just before clocks are pushed back and the other is born after they are set back. For example, if a twin is born 1 minute before clocks are to be set back, and the other twin is born 15 minutes later, after clocks had been set back, the birth certificates would indicate that the older twin was born at 1:59 a.m. while the younger twin was born at 1:14 a.m. How Much Money Does Daylight Saving Time Save? Little agreement exists on how much- if any- money daylight saving time saves. A study  done to measure the financial impact in Indiana after it adopted daylight saving time concluded that changing clocks actually had the opposite effect of the one intended. While people did use less artificial light, they spent more on heating and cooling, resulting in an overall increase in energy usage of 1 percent. In the warmest summer months, people used their air conditioning longer into the evening, and in the cooler spring and fall months, they used their heat more in the darker mornings. While daylight saving time arguably benefits tourism and other industries that profit from recreational activities, Forbes notes that television ratings take a hit because people are outside longer as opposed to inside watching their favorite programs. A 2012 paper in the Journal of Applied Psychology even argued that daylight saving time had a negative impact on productivity because it increased cyberloafing, when employees surf the internet instead of working. The authors argued that daylight saving time has a negative impact on sleep habits and patterns, and that the lack of quality sleep leads to increased cyberloafing.

How Do I Nail the Next Interview Round

How Do I Nail the Next Interview Round How Do I Nail the Next Interview Round You nailed the first interview â€" now what? How to prepare for subsequent interview rounds.Question:  Could you please share with me the best things to remember going into an interview? I’ve had 3 face-to-face, and feel like the one coming up next week is the one! â€" Ron D., Lakeview, NYAnswer:  Congratulations Ron, it sounds like your job search is going well. Many people struggle with maintaining momentum throughout the interview process. Here are a few things to keep in mind for your final interview rounds.Show your cultural fit.Once you’ve proven that you have the right skill set and experience for the job, shift your focus to showcasing how you are a cultural fit. If hired, will you fit in with the team and thrive? Will you be around for the long run?To find out about a company’s culture before your interview, visit sites such as Glassdoor.com and Vault.com, in addition to the company’s corporate site. Additionally, search your network to see if you know anyone who wor ks (or has worked) at the organization and take those people out for a cup of coffee to pick their brain.Prepare for negotiations.I always advise clients to tactfully avoid talking dollars and cents for as long as possible. You want enough interview time to first prove what a value-add you are for the company, so that when they make an offer, you’re no longer just a line item in the budget. You’re a potential contributor. That being said, you should always be prepared for the conversation. Research competitive salary information for the position using resources such as PayScale  and Salary.com, and calculate the total value of your last compensation package. Use that information to develop a compensation range that includes the lowest amount you’d accept and the highest number you think you could ask for within reason. Consider all tangible and intangible benefits that are important to you â€" this could include salary, signing bonus, commission, car allowance, travel budget, training or continued education. If you have the time, I highly recommend checking out Jack Chapman’s articles on negotiation and his book, “Negotiating Your Salary: How to Make $1,000 a Minute.” His information is easy to understand and incredibly helpful in the salary negotiation process.

Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now What

Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now What Unemployment Benefits Run Out in New York, Now What Being unemployed, especially around the holidays, is rough. But it could get even harder   in the Big Apple. Come the end of December federal unemployment assistance will run out for New York unless an emergency extension is issued. The New York economy could lose as many as 40,500 jobs in 2011 without the extension, the White House Council of Economic Advisers reported yesterday.   This legislation could, in turn, create a job loss domino effect. Fewer jobs means less money put back into the economy, resulting in even fewer jobs, and so on and so forth. The start of what many call the ” vicious cycle of unemployment.” Jobless claims are certainly not limited to New York. Across the country the economy continues to suffer. There are   steps to take that can help you avoid unemployment potholes   no matter where you are located. For New Yorkers, State Labor Commissioner Colleen Gardner says, “The unemployed should still file claims with the Labor Department,” just to keep a continuous record. On the job-seeking front career experts suggest making the most of your unemployment by taking on “contract or temporary work,” which will help you stay current in your field, and show employers that you have not been idle since your last permanent, full-time job, said Cheryl Palmer, president of executive-coaching firm Call to Career in Ladders article How I Spent My Unemployment. All of the experts seem to agree that when it comes to unemployment, either benefits or joblessness, maintaining continuity is key. Nursing Assistant Skills List

Nursing Assistant Skills List Nursing Assistant Skills List Nursing assistants have a wide range of responsibilities encompassing many duties, from pain management and infection control to creating a safe healthcare environment. Personal skills range from sound judgment to maintaining respectful bedside manner. Nursing assistants work under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN), usually in a hospital or a long-term care setting. They have to complete a post-secondary training program and go through a certification process. Although you don’t need a degree to be a nursing assistant, relevant degree programs do exist and will both help prepare you for the work and make you more competitive against other entry-level candidates. Nursing Assistant Duties A nursing assistant’s duties revolve mostly around the basic daily physical care of patients and associated record keeping. You might help patients use the bathroom or take care of other sanitary needs. You might feed patients who cannot feed themselves, turn bed-ridden patients to prevent pressure sores, transport patients, and help ambulatory patients walk. You might also change dressings, help with surgical prep, check vital signs and weight, and perform a basic urinalysis. If a patient summons help, you’ll be the one to find out what they need. You’ll have to keep proper records of everything you do and you’ll have to pass on your observations of your patients to your supervisor. You will also be responsible for maintaining your work at all applicable professional and legal standards.? Examples of Nursing Assistant Skills Nursing assistant skills fall into two main categories, technical and interpersonal. The technical skills are more obviously medical and more specific to nursing. Interpersonal skills, in contrast, are hardly unique to nurses but are critically important to their work. Basic Medical Knowledge You will not be a doctor, but you do have to understand biological and physiological issues, including common disorders and diseases. You need to understand infectious diseases and how to prevent the spread of infection. You need to understand what’s going on with your patients, and if somebody suddenly presents with dangerous symptoms, you need to notice so you can get help. Basic Medical Techniques Nursing assistants will usually observe and record vital signs, including respiration, body temperature, pulse, and blood pressure. You should also know how to change dressings properly and maintain patient safety and personal hygiene. Empathy and Compassion Empathy and compassion are seldom thought of as skills, but you can practice and develop them. You cannot be an effective nursing assistant if you do not care about your patients as human beings. Experiencing empathy and expressing compassion will make for a happier career as a nursing assistant, and will make you overall much better at your job. If you have an innately hard time embodying these qualities, the role of a nursing assistant might not be for you. Time Management and Organization Medical facilities can become chaotic if staff are not careful. Patient needs can become backlogged and an entire facility can run on a time deficit, raising everyones workload, if time isnt managed and tasks arent well organized. You will be responsible for keeping yourself on track, and you may also be responsible for keeping colleagues and bosses in line with organization practices and on schedule. Attention to Detail Not only must you do all your patient care techniques correctly every time, but if a patient’s health goes in the wrong direction, you should notice. Even small changes in a patient can indicate a problem, like a change in pupil dilation, breath odor, or personal habit, for example. You should be comfortable with and aware of the small details. Communication Skills Not only must you document everything thoroughly, clearly, and correctly, you should also be just as strong in your verbal communications. Interactions with doctors, other medical and nursing staff, patients, and their families will certainly be an integral part of any nursing assistant job. 10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave

10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave 10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave 10 Tips for Negotiating Maternity Leave It̢۪s essential to plan ahead when negotiating maternity leave. Here̢۪s how. From the nursery to the lack of sleep to the type of delivery you'll have, there are so many things to plan for when there's a new baby on the way. On top of all that, you also need to determine how long you'd like to be away from work to care for your new baby. Negotiating maternity leave takes some education and planning. A well-thought-out approach to requesting leave can increase your chances of being approved for an extended leave if you end up needing one. Below are some tips to help you generate your plan of action so you can enjoy your new baby without worrying about having to return to work too early. Research and understand your company's leave policies By law, organizations that meet certain criteria (50 or more employees living within a 50-mile radius) have to offer up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to eligible employees to care for the birth of a child or an adoption. Some organizations, however, offer additional maternity leave that might be paid or unpaid. Many organizations will pay for leave up until the doctor releases you to return to work, which is typically six weeks for a natural delivery and eight weeks for a cesarean delivery. The remaining leave might be unpaid, or some companies allow you to use paid personal or vacation time for the remainder of your leave. Depending on your organization, this leave might dip into your FMLA leave, which is the norm from my experience. Some organizations will also allow employees to take a personal leave of absence for a specified period. You need to research and get clear on your company's policies and how much leave is possible for you to take based on the standard company policy. Ask your human resources department about the organization's maternity-leave policy and how everything works, as well. From there, you can determine how much additional time you might need, if any. To read more about employer requirements and employee eligibility requirement for FMLA, refer to DOL Fact Sheet # 28: The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 and the DOL Family and Medical Leave Act web page. Check in with other expecting or new moms When you're pregnant, other expecting moms and new moms can make great allies in general. You're all entering a new stage of your life that will surely bring surprises, joy, new challenges, and so much more. If you can connect with another mom who is close to giving birth, just gave birth, or just returned to work after maternity leave, you can ask them about how they negotiated maternity leave and what they received. This could help you in determining the minimum leave you could go in asking for, and can also provide moral support in requesting what you need in general. Go in with a plan and be clear on what you're requesting Go into the meeting with all the information you need, including research on who you're negotiating with, so you know how to navigate the meeting based on their style or history with the matter. The more prepared you are, the better able you'll be to make your case in negotiating maternity leave. Before requesting leave, or even bringing up the subject, get clear on how much time you'd like to take, and plan for more than you think you might need. It's better to come back early than to request an extension when you realize your desire to have more time to spend with your newborn. Also, try to come from a benefit to the company approach versus an exception to policy approach the latter is often an uncomfortable stance for companies. There's a lot of decent research that shows that organizations that offer maternity leave to new moms have a higher retention rate. The National Partnership for Women Families has published some good statistics on offering paid leave in a 2015 Fact Sheet, Paid Family and Medical Leave: Good for Business. You can share this type of info with your manager to support your case. Leave your desk in good hands When you're requesting leave, it can help if your manager knows you're willing to check in every so often to keep him or her up to date on your status. Checking in does not imply that you agree to do any work, as you want to be careful not to make that commitment unless you truly want to. However, it can provide peace of mind to your manager that you're still in the game and plan to return to work. Going to your manager with a detailed plan of action and coverage while you're out will help ease his or her mind about how your work will be covered and by whom. It will also help you prepare for your leave with less stress knowing all your bases will be covered while you're out. The more you can show that you're leaving major projects and day-to-day activities and tasks in good hands, the better. Offer to attend important meetings If you can manage, it might help you score a win if you offer to come in for important meetings that are on the schedule. For example, if there's major project-planning meeting or a big vendor meeting and you're an account manager, you can offer to attend those meetings while on leave, assuming you're available and well enough to do so. Maybe consider calling in for the meetings as well. Consider part-time work I have a couple of friends who decided to return to work part time after each of their second children were born. This allowed them to remain in the good graces of the company while also having more time to stay at home with their children. If you can afford to and you know you'd like more time, find out if this might be an option for you. Going from leave to part time to full time later down the road is also a great way to ease back into the workplace after having a child, especially because going back at full speed can be a difficult transition for many. Be ready to renegotiate There's a good chance you might not get everything you ask for, so be ready to negotiate and come up with alternative solutions to support your leave. Related:7 Powerful Ways You Can Improve Your Negotiation Skills Keep things in perspective It's not always easy to get additional leave, especially if it's outside of policy or the policy states it's at the discretion of management. When negotiating maternity leave, know this going in and give it your best shot. Again, the more prepared and clear you are about what you need, the better. Also, if the organization is short on staff, is a newer organization, or you've had recent poor reviews or disciplinary action, all of these factors might impact whether or not you're approved. Keep your priorities in mind When negotiating for maternity leave, it can be helpful to keep in mind what your priorities are. For most who are starting or growing a family, it's their children. We tend to have more regrets when we don't make choices or take a stand for the things that are important to us. That's not to say that work is not a priority because it is for many, but not more of a priority than their children, especially newborns. Making money to feed those children is also a priority, of course. My point is that it's OK to ask for extra time to spend with your newborn if that's a priority for you, because if you don't, you might feel regret that you didn't at least try. Though you might not get approved for everything you ask for, you can feel good knowing you spoke up out of respect for yourself and your priorities about what you needed. Before negotiating maternity leave, get a sense for the list above, and think through your personal circumstances and the organization you work for. Then decide what will be best for you. Creation Agency CEO on what is going to make or break your sales team

Creation Agency CEO on what is going to make or break your sales team Creation Agency CEO on what is going to make or break your sales team Ladders recently spoke with Jack Kosakowski, CEO of Creation Agency U.S. and leading expert on social selling and sales innovation, on what attracted him to the industry, key steps for salespeople when it comes to cold contacting, sales and marketing convergence, and more. Read on below.  What initially attracted you to the field of sales?  Growing up I had the honor to travel around with my grandfather and watch him light a sales room on fire. He was in charge of the #1 sales organization at a company called Masterguard. Essentially, I was raised to be a salesman by what I regard as the best salesman that ever lived. My goal is to carry on his legacy in the field of sales.  How important of a role does technology play in the sales field and specifically in your work?  Technology is going to make or break your sales team in the digital age. It is the key driver for productivity and helping turn targeted insights into targeted sales conversations. It is the only way to identify the ri ght people, to have the right conversation at the right time.  Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Jack Kosakowski  Please tell me a little about your role at Creation Agency and what makes it unique.Creation Agency is unique in the fact that we are true marketing and sales practitioners who come and help high-growth companies design and execute innovative demand generation strategies from real-time experience. We follow a model called “Your Marketing Team As A Service.” We don’t just tell you what you should be doing, we actually do it for you.  What technology/innovation/platform has had the most profound effect on the field of sales and marketing in the past year or two, and why?  Marketing automation platforms like Hubspot and Marketo are game changers in my opinion. Very few companies understand how to set them up in a way that actually helps them move the needle, b ut the ones who do are going to win long-term. These platforms can help align sales and marketing activities and help fill the gap which is huge for capitalizing on real opportunities.  What are the biggest challenges, from a technical and/or business standpoint, that those in sales face nowadays?  Most sales teams are not equipped to utilize social channels as their competitive advantage for communication. Buyers want to control where and how they communicate. Very few salespeople understand how to give them the communication experience that leads to the sale.  What are your thoughts on content marketing? Does it play a prevalent role in your work at Creation Agency?Content marketing is a tricky one. Most companies are not creating content that actually helps the business move the needle. 80% of Creation Agency’s new business comes through referrals and content. We are very strategic about who creates content and even more strategic about how that content is distributed. Deliveri ng content from an executive inside your organization is the new way of communicating that leads to the highest conversions. Most companies still don’t get that.  Do you feel the worlds of sales and marketing are converging, and if so, is this a good thing? Or should they remain their own distinct fields? Please explain.  Yes, they are essentially becoming one in the same. What is the difference between prospecting and lead generation? That is a question you should be asking yourself? Is there one? Not really.  What are the key steps that salespeople should take when it comes to cold calling/emailing?There is so much semantics around the argument of cold calling in the digital age. It is just that… Semantics. Cold calling isn’t dead. It is being reinvented by the amount of information that salespeople now have access to. The phone is still alive. It is how you get someone on the phone and how you start the conversation that is the key using digital channels as your touch point s.What has been the most satisfying moment of your career/proudest career achievement, and why?Building a team and watching the agency grow is my proudest career achievement. 3.5 years ago it was just me by a computer trying to figure out how to get my first client. Now, I have a team of 13 people and we help some of the fastest growing saas companies scale. It puts a smile on my face every day. I love our clients, employees, and the challenge of the work we do. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Study Fiber intake is at an alarmingly low level in America

Study Fiber intake is at an 'alarmingly low' level in America Study Fiber intake is at an 'alarmingly low' level in America The impact fiber has in keeping us regulated is pretty well established, but literature highlighting the role fiber plays in preventing heart disease and certain types of cancer is pretty abundant as well.A review of 58 clinical trials, 4,635 individuals and over 180 studies conducted by  The Lancet  published in January,  explored the specific benefits of a diet that does not severely limit the intake of fiber. The data yielded a 15-30% risk decrease to all-cause cardiovascular-related mortality, alongside decreases of type 2 diabetes and stroke incidences.  A study conducted in 2013, revealed that dietary fiber is associated with both lower weight and gut health.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Despite this, only 5% of Americans are meeting their daily fiber requirements according to a recent study published in The American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. The Institute of M edicine recommends men take in 38 grams of fiber a day, and women take in 25 grams of fiber a day- with some dietary nutritionists, like  Autumn Kumlien for instance, suggesting we adjust these measurements slightly as we age.  According to Kumlien, for men and women over the age of 51, the daily amount should land somewhere around 30 and 21 grams respectively.A study published in the Journal Of Nutrition reports, “Current fiber intakes are alarmingly low, with long-term implications for public health related to risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, certain gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, and the continuum of metabolic dysfunctions including prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.”Variations of FiberBefore you proceed with incorporating more fiber into your diet it’s important that you have an understanding of the different variations and their role in a healthy balanced meal.  For health purposes, fiber is generally categorized in these four ways: dietary/ funct ional fiber and soluble/insoluble fiber.Dietary fiber is the kind of fiber found organically in foods like fruits and vegetables. Functional fiber is fiber that is extracted and then added to processed foods or dietary supplements later.  Soluble fiber refers to a fiber that mixes with water in our gastrointestinal tract, while insoluble fiber refers to a fiber that does not.Foods like flax seeds, oatmeal, nuts, and lintels are rich in soluble fibers. The gel-like substance that is born out of the water/fiber blend has been  shown to help diminish spikes in blood sugar in addition to precluding cholesterol absorption and hindering movement of glucose in our blood.Soluble fibers delay the stomach emptying process, making us feel full for much longer which, in turn, makes us consume fewer calories.Whole grains, vegetables, and wheat bran, on the other hand, contain insoluble fibers that promote positive laxative effects. The bulking process initiated by insoluble fibers speeds up the passage of stool, effectively decreasing instances of constipation, hemorrhoids, and diverticulitis. Many high-fiber foods also come with additional health benefits.  Pears for example, which pack 5.5 grams of fiber on average, also help ward off free radicals involved with skin aging. Avocados, everyone’s favorite vitamin C/magnesium rich superfood, are additionally high in fiber and have also been linked to decreased risks for both cancer and depression.Simply put, a balanced diet needs to incorporate a sufficient amount of fiber. Fiber keeps us regular,  is instrumental in the prevention of a myriad of heart maladies, and  curbs habits that lead to weight gain. Moreover, the way fiber slows down  the movement of glucose in our bloodstream impedes frequent energy crashes associated with sugar spikes. In other words, fiber does a body good. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
